British scientists have discovered that, contrary to popular belief, mice don't like cheese.

Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University found that the furry rodents actually prefer foods with a high sugar content, such as grains and fruit.

The study involved putting various foods into a mousetrap to see which ones would attract the mice.

Animal behaviourist, David Holmes, said: "Mice respond to the smell, texture and taste of food and cheese is something that would not be available to them in their natural environment and therefore they would not respond to it."

A British driver was imprisoned after blowing up a speed camera - which turned out to be a fake.

Craig Moore, from Doncaster, thought he had been caught speeding after he was flashed by the camera in Hyde, Greater Manchester, last year.

Fearing he would lose his driving licence and his job, the father-of-one returned home to fetch some Thermite - an explosive mixture of powdered aluminium and iron oxide - and returned to blow up the device, causing £11,000 of damage.

Unbeknown to him the equipment was just a deterrent which cannot be used to prosecute motorists.

However, the device was fitted with CCTV which recorded the whole incident.

Moore was jailed for four months after he admitted destroying the equipment.
